Dick Enberg says goodbye to Wimbledon

A legend at "The Big W" says goodbye!

Wimbledon:  Enberg’s Finale Marked by “Enberg’s Reflections” Vignettes

Dick Enberg – whose voice, eloquence and enthusiasm, including his signature “Oh, My!”, have graced ESPN’s Wimbledon telecasts since 2004 – is calling his 28th and final fortnight in London.  He first worked the event he calls his favorite in 1979, the first year the men’s final was televised live in the U.S.  To mark the occasion, ESPN2 has been presenting “Enberg’s Reflections” penned by the winner of 13 Sports Emmy Awards – nearly half of them for writing – plus the Sports Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award.  Here’s the first few: daily “Enberg’s Reflections” vignettes.

Enberg on: The Lure of Wimbledon
This event invariably grabs you.  I had no background in tennis when I first came here in 1979, but quickly learned the emotion expressed by the fans and players is so strong that it envelopes you and you end up caring as much.  The players know that with a win they will be part of tennis history….after all, it’s called ‘The Championships.’”

Enberg on: Writing about Wimbledon
When you are in love with someone, it is easy to write to them.  At Wimbledon, the words come easy to me through that love.”

1972 Wimbledon Champ Stan Smith on Enberg:
When I think of Dick Enberg, I think of class.  This guy has done it with class for over 40 years, not only in tennis, but in other sports.  Wimbledon has a special place in his heart, because we’ve talked about it several times, I was able to be involved at NBC with Dick for five years here at Wimbledon and he always loved being over here, he loved following the tennis, he knew the tennis well, he knew the players well and he is the type of guy, you give him 30 seconds to do a closing of a show and that clock goes in his head and right at 29 he’d be ready to finish and it would be so eloquent as well as informative and it really got the gist of what was happening that day.

“I hope that Dick has a great last year here at Wimbledon.  It’s going to be some special memories for him as he looks back at the best shows he’s ever done and the best matches he’s ever covered.  I know he’s going to be doing baseball in San Diego, so I know he’ll enjoy that as well, but Wimbledon will miss Dick Enberg.”

Wimbledon & ESPN

Ortiz to captain AL HR Derby Team

I'm loving the new rules of this year's HR Derby at the All-Star Game! David Ortiz and Prince Fielder are captains of the AL and NL. They get to pick 3 players of their choosing and the players DON'T have to be All-Stars.

I'm digging it! Here's the release from MLB:

Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers and David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox have been named the first-ever captains of the National League and American League squads for the 2011 Home Run Derby.

Ortiz is the defending champion, having won the 2010 Home Run Derby in Anaheim, while Fielder won the previous year in St. Louis. The 2011 Home Run Derby will take place on Monday, July 11 at Chase Field in Phoenix at 8 p.m. (ET).

A new element of this year’s Derby format will be the team competition between the American League and National League. Fielder and Ortiz will each determine the other three participants on their teams and will personally extend the invitations. All players are eligible to participate in the Home Run Derby, not only those named to All-Star rosters. Each of the captains will select a charity of their choice which they will be hitting for during the Derby.

State Farm and Major League Baseball will donate a significant amount of money for charity through the event. The donations will be made as follows:

• $150,000 will be awarded to the winning captain's charity in his name

• $100,000 will be awarded to Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) in the name of the winning captain.

* $25,000 will be awarded to the charity of the captain of the losing team in his name.

KLAPISCH: ARE THE YANKEES BETTER OFF WITHOUT JETER? – writer Bob Klapisch questions if the Yankees are better off without Derek Jeter:  “No one in the organization will touch that question — at least not now, and certainly not on the record — but the team’s overall surge in the last two weeks has left officials wondering what to do with the aging captain when he finally comes off the disabled list,” writes Klapisch.  “Unless Jeter experiences a quick and dramatic turnaround, his return to the lineup will create the worst-possible dilemma for Joe Girardi. Not only is Jeter expecting to be reinstalled as the everyday shortstop, he intends to bat in the leadoff spot, too. Statistically, Jeter should be at the bottom of the batting order — of the Yankees’ nine starters, he ranked seventh in on-base percentage. However as one member of the organization put it, “I’d be very, very surprised” if Jeter made any such concession to his manager.”

Decisionmakers with Paterno & Coach K

From ESPN -

Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno & Krzyzewski Airs June 30

ESPN’s 90-minute special Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno & Krzyzewski – featuring an in-depth and candid discussion with legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski – will air Thursday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN and continue on ESPNU at 9 p.m.

ESPN college football and basketball studio and game announcer Rece Davis hosts the special, which was recorded on Monday, June 20 in front of an audience at Eisenhower Auditorium on the campus of Penn State. Participants include guests who have had personal experiences with each coach: Matt Millen and Michael Robinson, who played for Coach Paterno, and Jay Bilas and Jay Williams, who played for Coach Krzyzewski.

The special explores coaching, ethics, integrity, friendship, legacy, pressures and issues associated with intercollegiate athletics, working with student-athletes, and more. The program includes questions from the audience during the first hour on ESPN and audience member questions for the entire final 30 minutes on ESPNU.

Quotes from Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno & Krzyzewski:

Paterno on the challenges of NCAA rules compliance:
"I broke a rule the other day. We have an indoor place and the kids were working out. I walk by, stood there and watched them work out. Didn't talk to anybody or anything. I go back in the office and said to the staff, you know, so-and-so looked pretty good running. (A staffer said) 'Where'd you see him? You know you broke the rule.'"

Krzyzewski on why he stayed at Duke: "I've never made a career decision based on money. I've always made it for where I've had a passion, where I could feel good about it, and then you make money. But I love college sports and I love Duke."

Paterno on being an icon: "Tell me what is an icon? If you mean some good looking handsome (guy), I like it!"

Krzyzewski on his greatest moment of adversity: "Any day at practice with coach (Bob) Knight." (Krzyzewski played for Knight at Army).

Paterno on teaching: "I got hooked on seeing what some kids lacked, that I thought ‘gee, you know what? I know better than that.’ Maybe I didn't, but I thought I did. And I stuck my two cents in a lot of people’s lives, and at the time, I thought I was gonna get punched in the mouth!"

Krzyzewski on involving his daughters in the program:
"If you ask our players, they'll tell you that they're like sisters. They BETTER only be sisters!"
Paterno on what makes a great teacher: “A lot of different things, a lot of different ways to teach, a lot of different people have different personalities. I think a conviction that you have as a person that you think would be appropriate for young people looking for somebody to give them some direction. I think a good teacher has some empathy towards that. Tries to find out exactly if a kid has a problem, if he doesn’t have a problem. I think there are different types of people that need different responses. Sometimes you have to kick them in the rear end, other times you have to stroke them, other times give them a big kiss.”

24/7 Mayweather/Ortiz debuts on HBO

From HBO Sports -

NEW YORK, June 28, 2011
– HBO Sports’ groundbreaking “24/7” reality franchise, which has captured 14 Sports Emmy® Awards, returns in August for its tenth boxing installment with 24/7 MAYWEATHER/ORTIZ, an all-new four-episode, all-access series, it was announced today by Ross Greenburg, president, HBO Sports. Debuting SATURDAY, AUG. 27 (10:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT), the series will follow two elite fighters in one of boxing’s most competitive divisions as they prepare for their intriguing pay-per-view showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sept. 17.

“ ‘24/7’ excels when there are great characters and compelling drama, and this fight has both,” noted Greenburg. “The return of Floyd Mayweather, with his larger-than-life personality, and the odyssey of Victor Ortiz, with his inspiring tale of perseverance and achievement, provide the perfect backdrop for this new edition of ‘24/7.’ ”

Episodes two and three of 24/7 MAYWEATHER/ORTIZ debut on subsequent Saturdays – Sept. 3 (10:00-10:30 p.m.) and 10 (10:00-10:30 p.m.) – while the finale debuts Friday, Sept. 16 (9:00-9:30 p.m.), the night before the high-stakes welterweight bout. All four episodes will have multiple replay dates on HBO, and the series will also be available on HBO On Demand® and HBO GO.

24/7 MAYWEATHER/ORTIZ will provide exclusive behind-the-scenes access, along with in-depth interviews, as the fighters prepare for their 147-pound world title fight. A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., the talented and opinionated Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) has evolved into a celebrated superstar, and now resides in Las Vegas. Kansas native Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs) survived a turbulent upbringing and currently lives in Oxnard, Cal. He shocked the boxing world with a win over the previously undefeated Andre Berto on HBO last April, claiming a 147-pound title.

This fast-paced series will capture the interactions and rigors both men experience in preparing for their contest. Making his fifth “24/7” appearance, Mayweather is expected to surround himself with a familiar contingent of family and friends as he trains with trusted longtime trainer and uncle Roger Mayweather. Ortiz is making his “24/7” debut.

24/7 MAYWEATHER/ORTIZ is the latest installment of the acclaimed “24/7” franchise that began in 2007. At the 2011 Sports Emmy® Awards, “24/7” was recognized with two Emmys® for production excellence and is the most honored sports series on television over the past four years, earning 14 Sports Emmys®.

The St. Petersburg Times has noted, “The best sports reality show on television is HBO’s ‘24/7.’ ”

On Saturday, Sept. 17 at 9:00 p.m. (ET)/6:00 p.m. (PT), HBO Pay-Per-View presents “Mayweather vs. Ortiz,” live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The executive producers of 24/7 MAYWEATHER/ORTIZ are Ross Greenburg and Rick Bernstein; senior producer, Dave Harmon; coordinating producers, Scott Boggins and Bentley Weiner; producer, Abtin Motia; writer, Aaron Cohen. Liev Schreiber narrates.

Ugh, the fill-ins!

Let's just suffice it to say that I've had to physically turn my radio off the past two days with the fill-ins on the various sportsradio stations in the area.

Let me just say that outside Sean McAdam or Dan Roche, both of who are very good, just don't cut it for me and yes, I'm talking about all stations here.

CM Punk ends RAW with AMAZING promo!

In case you missed it, it's a classic!

Thanks to the WWE/USA Network for the video.

TNT’s Groundbreaking Wide Open Coverage Returns for its Fifth Year in Primetime at the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona powered by Coca-Cola

Wide Open coverage hasn’t missed a total lap of green flag racing over the past two years

TNT’s innovative Wide Open television format will return for the fifth consecutive year during the network’s exclusive coverage of the primetime Coke Zero 400 at Daytona powered by Coca-Cola on Saturday, July 2.  The network’s Wide Open coverage debuted during the 2007 Daytona 400 race and has resulted in only nine missed laps of green flag racing in four years, and zero laps in the last two races.  The groundbreaking format provides continuous race coverage free of national commercial breaks and features more than 20% unobstructed race action, than that of a standard telecast, by using a letterbox widescreen format, which allows for a continuous scroll of race information.  In place of the national ads, the telecast features a variety of animated sponsor messages, unique branded content and distinct on-screen graphic elements.

The six national sponsors featured in this year’s innovative telecast include Coke Zero, Coors Light, Pfizer, Sprint, Toyota, Warner Brothers Films’ Horrible Bosses and Crazy, Stupid, Love.  This video model has proven successful for advertisers during previous coverage. According to Nielsen IAG Research, advertisements featured during the 2010 TNT NASCAR Wide Open Coverage race delivered a 68% brand recall score, a significantly higher recall score when compared to standard ads featured during sports and NASCAR coverage.

No stranger to televising NASCAR racing with uninterrupted coverage, Turner was the first network to use side-by-side coverage in 2000 during the UAW-GM Quality 500 NASCAR Race on Oct. 8 in Charlotte with TBS’ “No Breaks Coverage.”

“We look forward to our fifth consecutive year of providing viewers with continuous green flag racing and more information on the 43 drivers in the field for the signature race of TNT’s NASCAR Summer Series,” said Jeff Behnke, Executive Producer/Senior Vice President of Turner Sports.  “Through TNT and NASCAR.COM, we look forward to providing race fans with an all-access pass to all the sights and sounds of our primetime race in Daytona.”

The network will rev up its pre-race coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET with Countdown to Green delivered by Pizza Hut with Lindsay Czarniak (host) and Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds (analysts).  TNT’s acclaimed Pride of NASCAR series will feature a profile of the three-time National Motorsports Press Association Driver of the Year Cale Yarborough who won the Daytona 500 four times (1968, 1977, 1983 and 1984).  Joining the studio show prior to the race will be No. 29 Kevin Harvick for an interview to talk about his season. Other pre-race features include McReynolds in a wind tunnel with No. 14 Tony Stewart’s crew chief Darian Grubb to explain how the two-car draft works and why it’s important at Daytona International Speedway.

TNT will air the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona powered by Coca-Cola beginning at 7:30 p.m. (ET) with play-by-play announcer Adam Alexander calling the race alongside analysts Petty and Wally Dallenbach in the booth.  In addition, McReynolds will make frequent contributions from the infield as he breaks down crew strategy and analyzes car adjustments using the TNT Offtrack Robotic Car (TORC) presented by Toyota.   Pit reporters Chris Neville, Ralph Sheheen, Marty Snider and Matt Yocum will provide reports throughout the race.

TNT RaceBuddy on NASCAR.COM will once again provide live companion coverage online.  Fans can choose from a total of ten camera views, including two Mosaics.  Eight individual camera angles include four In-Car Driver Cams, two Battle Cams highlighting head-to-head competition between drivers, a Backstretch Cam and a Pit Road Cam.  The two Mosaic Views allow fans to view four streams at once.  Returning features to the site include the DVR Function, an Enhanced LIVE Leaderboard and RaceView’s position tracker:  Fans can also connect throughout the race on Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo! Messenger and MySpace in a seamlessly-integrated social media experience.

WWE releases Chavo Guerrero

It's time for Chavo Guerrero to say goodbye to the WWE.  It's at his request and yes, he's bitter about it.

Here's what he said on his Twitter account:

"Yes, it's true. My release is the big news I was talking about. But let's get something straight. Iasked for my release. I was just tired of not being used correctly. Just cuz u can make other ppl look good, doesn't mean they should just have u lose to them. The same thing happened to Eddie. After being champ, they still had him working mid card status.

Being a Guerrero, we've been taught since diapers to get the most out of ppl & matches. It's our gift, but also our curse. WWE has always used us to make other ppl look good. It all comes down to being happy. I was not happy in WWE anymore. I had a smile on my face last night though when I got my release though! :) now it's time for me to start being a Guerrero again, and start kicking ass again, be able to tell stories in the ring like u know we can. :) win or lose I will never go back to the place WWE put me in. I will never go back to being under utilized and watching ppl who suck get bigger "pushes" than me!

Thank u to all of u who stuck by me & kept reminding me, I was better than that! :) stay tuned.. Big things coming!! Now I will really be able to entertain u! :) like me or hate me, 1 thing I have always tried to do is entertain u and give u fans your $ worth. Even if my hands were tied most of the time. I love u all and can't wait for the future!! So happy. :)"

As for the WWE, we get the standard departing notice:

"World Wrestling Entertainment has come to terms on the release of WWE SmackDownSuperstar Chavo Guerrero as of today, June 25, 2011. We wish Guerrero the best in all future endeavors."

Celtics trade out, draft Johnson

The Celtics moved out of their 25th pick in tonight's NBA Draft, trading down to 27 after a trade with New Jersey nets them a future 2nd round pick and an exchange of the first round picks.

The Celtics picked Providence's Marshon Brooks for NJ at 25 while the Nets picks Purdue's JaJuan Johnson at 27 for Boston.

Johnson's a 6'10" big man who can run the floor, block shots and play some good pick'n'roll basketball, something the Celtics love to do.

Read more on Johnson in his profile on ESPN.

Brooks, who many mock drafts had going as early as 15, gets some needed playing time in NJ instead of sitting on Boston's bench due to his lack of defensive skills.

4 Things I Love Today!

Five things I love today....

1. This trailer for "Bad Teacher!" WARNING - it's for mature audiences only for graphic language.

2. Jim Riggleman's Stand against the Nats - It may not have been the best financial decision, but I love when people make a stand and follow it up. Riggleman said he would walk away from the Nationals, winners of 11 of 12 (including today's 1-0 walkoff win over Seattle) if he didn't have a contact extension by game's end. The Nats won, no contract and he walked.

3. The pre-NBA Draft buzz! Plus, social media makes it so much better than it was too!

4. Jay Bilas talking about...anything. He's just that good. Plus, he's the only reason to watch ESPN's Draft Coverage.

– The fan-designed bow ties supporting our troops are in and we’re one step closer to deciding which bow tie MLB on FOX reporter and senior MLB columnist Ken Rosenthal wears on the final regular-season broadcast of 2011. The field, which started with the top 32 designs submitted in the Bow Ties for the Troops Tournament, has now been cut in half. Fans can vote for their favorite design through Thursday, July 7 at Rosenthal wears the winning bow tie during the September 24 MLB on FOX SATURDAY GAME OF THE WEEK. JON PAUL MOROSI: AL IS REAL PITCHING-DOMINANT LEAGUE – National MLB on FOX writer Jon Paul Morosi takes a look at pitching this season and comes up with one clear winner: the American League. “DH, no DH, whatever: Right now, the American League has better pitchers than the National League. For decades, it would have been absurd to make such a statement. Everyone knew the NL pitched and the AL hit. But times have changed. At some point this year, the Junior Circuit sneaked into his older brother’s room and stole his identity. Now the league with the DH rule is ruled by the pitchers.”

EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX ROLLS ONTO FOX SUNDAY – The European Grand Prix comes to FOX Sports on Sunday, June 26 (12:00 PM ET) from Valencia, Spain. Twisting through the America's Cup port, the Juan Carlos I Marina, Valencia is a relatively long track that consists of 25 turns, most of which are sweeping corners that give the circuit a fast and flowing nature. Last year’s winner Sebastian Vettel discusses the challenging course: “The circuit is a street circuit, but the average speed (200 km/h) is extremely high, so it’s tricky. In general you need a lot of wing for the corners and less for the relatively long straights, which means you have to find a compromise. There are no run-off zones, so you can’t make any mistakes - a small slide and you end up in the wall... Overtaking is difficult and the only real possibility is in Turn 12. We had a good race there last year and the car should be good. I’m looking forward to it.”

: The Red Bull X-Fighters Freestyle Motocross Tour heads to Rome for the second time in the history of the sport, airing on FUEL TV Sunday, June 26 (8:00 PM ET). There will be 50,000 spectators this year in the Stadio Olimpico, which was one of the venues of the 1990 World Cup soccer tournament. With two of six competitions held already, no clear frontrunner has emerged, with Spain’s Dany Torres taking the first stop in Dubai and American Nate Adams winning the second stop in Brazil.

Bryant Gumbel slams the USGA and the US Open

In tonight's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO, Mr. Gumbel, as usual, pulls no punches as he slames the USGA and the US Open. Read and enjoy...

“Finally tonight, the U.S. Golf Association should be ashamed of itself. The same folks who like to claim they’re the caretakers of the game took a national championship that has always been revered, and this past weekend, made a mockery of it. Instead of setting up a U.S. Open course, as they always have, to identify the best player. They seem to have sought only to identify the most viewers.

Yes, the course they laid out was nominally long, but as even those who regularly shill from the game noted, they played the tees up, they thinned the rough, and they placed many of the pins in bowls that allowed many balls that were hit to a green to simply funnel to the hole from all directions.

In no way does this discredit the impressive and likeable Open winner, Rory McIlroy. That he finished with a score of 16-under par is remarkable, but that so many made it look like a local pitch-and-putt is an embarrassment. On Sunday, 20 golfers finished this U.S. Open under par. Twenty! That’s as many golfers that have finished under par in the last 12 Opens combined.

Look, as a rule, I don’t buy conspiracy theories. I don’t subscribe to suspicions about Roswell, the grassy knoll, and fake lunar landings. But I do believe USGA honchos sold out this weekend. Knowing the absence of Tiger Woods would cost them audience, I believe they decided to try to make up for it by enabling anyone who teed it up to go low in the hopes that lots of birdies would mean lots of viewers. That their Open plan instead generated lousy TV ratings that were down 26%, suggests that karma’s alive and well in the world of golf.”

Gruden QB camp returns with Terrelle Pryor

From ESPN -

ESPN Announces Gruden’s QB Camp – Terrelle Pryor

One-hour special on Thursday, June 30 at 9 p.m. ET

ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden will conduct a one-on-one film session and workout with former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the hour-long special Gruden’s QB Camp – Terrelle Pryor on Thursday, June 30, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN (re-airing at 10 p.m. on ESPN2). Excerpts from the special will be presented on SportsCenter beginning Monday, June 27.

An ESPN crew shot the Gruden-Pryor meeting Monday at Gruden’s office in Tampa and at the practice facility at the University of South Florida.

ESPN college football anchor Rece Davis will host the one-hour special. In addition to offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at Pryor’s film session with Gruden, Davis will provide a timeline and perspective on the events at Ohio State that forced head coach Jim Tressel’s resignation and eventually lead to Pryor’s decision to forgo his final year of eligibility and make himself eligible for the NFL’s supplementary draft.

Pryor is the latest NFL prospect to step into the film room at Gruden’s affectionately termed Fired Football Coaches Association (FFCA) offices. ESPN’s Super Bowl-winning head coach turned MNF analyst has also met with NFL Draft prospects the past two years, including Heisman Trophy winners Sam Bradford, Cam Newton and Tim Tebow. Gruden also conducted a similar session with Super Bowl XLIV champions Drew Brees and head coach Sean Payton for Gruden's Champ Camp – A Visit with the Super Saints in August 2010.
