November: ESPN’s Most-Watched Month Ever
ESPN had a larger total-day audience in November than any month in its 31-plus-year history, averaging 1,189,000 homes, besting the previous mark of 1,164,000 set in September 2009. The network averaged a 1.2 rating for the month, according to Nielsen, tied for the best of any month on record (since 1992) with September of 2009 and 2010, and a record 1,512,000 viewers (P2+, previous best – 1,448,000, Sept. 2009). Last month’s success was based on double-digit increases for college football, NBA and college basketball, as well as the addition of three NASCAR Sprint Cup races not on the network’s schedule last year. ESPN’s year-to-year increases over 2009, the previous best November, was 20 percent in rating (1.0 a year ago), 18 percent in households (1,009,000 homes) and 21 percent in viewers (1,248,000).
ESPN2 (up five percent), ESPNEWS (up 18 percent) and ESPNU (up 97 percent) all also enjoyed a larger audience in November than in 2009.
