Red Sox busy at GM Meetings

It's Day 1 at the GM Meetings in Chicago and it was a busy one for your Boston Red Sox. Let's wrap-up the day:

* - Tim Wakefield gets a two-year contract extension. He tells the Rob Bradford of WEEI.com that he'll retire after the deal at age 45.

* - The team picks up the $7.1 million option on catcher Victor Martinez, making him the #1 for next season.

* - The Sox declined the $5 million team option on catcher Jason Veritek. Tek could exercise his $3 million player option or just move on to another team.

* - Alex Gonzalez had his option declined as well although the team could look at him again for less than the $6 million option.

As for the rumors, lots of of them today. MLB Trade Rumors tracks 'em all down for you, including a great look by Tim Dierkes at the top 50 free agents and where they'll go for 2010 and beyond!
