Over the years, one of my favorite interviews and guests has been Dave Sims of the Big East Network, Westwood One Radio as the voice of Sunday Night Football for the NFL as well as the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and now, in his third season with the Seattle Mariners on radio and TV.
So, with March Madness upon us, I figured I would ask Dave to join us for some insight. He gratiously accepted and off we go. "The Crowe's Nest's" chat with Dave Sims, talking college hoops and a little Major League Baseball -
TCN: As one who knows the Big East inside and out, how many teams do you think should get into the NCAA Tournament?
DS: Big East teams into the NCAA: UConn, Louisville, Pitt, Marquette, Nova, PC, Syr, WV or Cincy.
TCN: What do you think Providence has to do to make it to the NCAA Tournament?
DS: Don't know the PC team. But obviously, keep winning! Great win over Pitt.
TCN: Does a team like Rhode Island, already with 22 wins, deserve to be in the Big Dance?
DS: Don't know URI....A10 is not as formidable as it was 10-years ago. So obviously, get hot, win games. There's no magic bullet. Win games!
TCN: Right now, who would your four #1 seeds be?
DS: Oklahoma, UConn, North Carolina, and maybe Washington. (Full disclosure: I'm bi-coastal, so the Huskies get my benefit of doubt.) Added later - Washington's a good story, but I forgot about Memphis! Sorry 'bout that Cal!
TCN: As the voice of the Seattle Mariners, what do you think of the move to bring Ken Griffey JR back to the M's?
DS: Junior's return has energized the team, the organization and the Great Pacific Northwest.
TCN: How will the M's do this season?
DS: Predicition? Who the hell knows! 2007 no one expected anything and the club competed for the wildcard up until Labor Day. 2008 the Mariners were said to be stacked, but then they lose 101 games. Lots of guys are looking for bounce back years and some unknowns are looking to make a name for themselves. That could result in a perfect storm and produce some wins. But again, who the hell knows.
TCN: This is our gratuitous plus portion where you get to tell the readers of The Crowe's Nest something you're working on or want them to know - in order words, our shameless self promotion plug portion of the show.
DS: What am I working on? Trying to consistently workout, and read a long list of books
We thank Dave for the time and the insight. You can catch him on the Big East Network doing both basketball and football, plus the upcoming NCAA Tournament as well as doing the Seattle Mariners games on TV for Fox Sports Northwest or on the radio at KIRO-AM.
Enjoy!
