No punishment for Celtics/Hawks

I'm kind of surprised by this one. The NBA will not suspend Kendrick Perkins or Marvin Williams for leaving the bench and stepping on the court during a first half squirmish between the Celtics and Hawks Monday Night. The Boston Herald has more.

Almost 1

My baby girl, Abbie is almost one! The big day's coming up in only a week. Here she is playing with her new friend, Lady Mariah...

Very cute indeed!

Dancing with the Stars Injury

Christian pulls an arm muscle and stops the dance! Watch it here!

BTW: Bad loss for the C's last nigth in Atlanta. Suspensions are coming for Kendrick Perkins and Marvin Williams for coming on the court in the 1st half during a squirmish. The NBA is usually cut and dry on this one: step on the court and you get a suspension. Stay tuned.

The Colts! The former East Providence Townie and BC Eagle signs a free-agent deal with Indy today.

Monday morning

The NFL Draft is done. For the first time in over six years, I was able to actually watch the draft and listen to it live instead of working it. Let me tell ya, not too impressed with ESPN. They missed picks LIVE, which you should never do in the first or second round (they missed several in the first round). At times, they just seemed disjointed and didn't know what direction to go in. Chris Berman, who I am a big fan of, didn't add much for me other than the annoying quip from time to time. Trey Wingo did a better job on day 2 IMHO. On the positive side, I loved Cris Carter's addition on day 2 as well as the faster rounds in day 1.

Good drafts:
1. Kansas City
2. Miami
3. Baltimore

Bad drafts:
1. Chicago
2. Cincinnati
3. New England (only because it was very average and too many reaches with Kevin O'Connell in round 3 when you could have gotten him later and Matt Slater taken too early). I expected more from the folks in Foxboro.

As for my Jets, I think they did an OK job. Love the pick of Vernon Gholston at #6 and Dustin Keller could be a possession and red zone boon for the J-E-T-S. Unfortunately, moving up to get their TE at the end of round 1 left them with a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Erik Ainge could prove to be interesting as a back-up QB.

Here's Mel Kiper's grades from ESPN.

Last night's Backlash PPV from the WWE saw Triple H win the Fatal Four Way Elimination Match to win his 12th World Title. Matt Hardy also won the US Title over MVP.

TMZ has news on Miley Cyrus and her racy photo in Vanity Fair and a 10-year relationship for the Rocket?

Big Brother 9's winner is Adam and he now owes $100,000 to charity for kids with autism after saying he would donate the money on national TV last night. In a good move, the fans of BB awarded James with $25,000 as the favorite juror.

Pats trade to #5?

Pat Kirwin from NFL.com projecting a Pats trade up to #5 to pick Vernon Gholston and the Chiefs taking Matt Ryan at #7.

Draft Day

It's NFL Draft Day, so here's a quick Top 10 from me, providing no trades, which I think there will be some, but I'll get to that later:

1. Miami - Jake Long, OT - Michigan
2. St.Louis - Chris Long, DE - Virginia
3. Atlanta - Glenn Dorsey, DT - LSU
4. Oakland - Darren McFadden, RB - Arkansas
5. Kansas City - Matt Ryan, QB - Boston College
6. NY Jets - Vernon Gholston, LB - Ohio State
7. Patriots - Keith Rivers, LB - USC
8. Baltimore - Sedrick Ellis, DT - USC
9. Cincinnati - Devin Thomas, WR - Michigan State
10. New Orleans - Leodis McKelvin, CB - Troy

Trades to be made: Atlanta to number two if they really think St.Louis might take Dorsey. Baltimore up to #5 to grab Matt Ryan (Ravens would trade down to take Joe Flacco later). Patriots could always trade down for picks - one rumored deal is New Orleans swapping picks with the Pats.

Should be a fun Saturday.

The Matt Walsh Deal

Here's what the parties are saying about the deal:

The Patriots:
"The New England Patriots are pleased to learn that Matt Walsh is finally willing to come forward to meet with the NFL. We are eagerly anticipating his honest disclosures to Commissioner Goodell next month and the return of all the materials he took during his time of employment. We fully expect this meeting to conclude the league’s investigation into a damaging and false allegation that was originally levied against the team on the day before this year’s Super Bowl.

It is important to note that there has never been a confidentiality agreement restricting Matt Walsh and no legal protections were ever necessary for him to speak to the NFL, to media outlets or to anyone else regarding his employment with the Patriots. He demanded to be released from responsibility for his statements, and after a frustrating and lengthy negotiation period, a settlement has finally been reached. Walsh has been granted a significant number of privileges through this agreement, none of which the Patriots or the NFL were obligated to give.

At all times, we cooperated fully with the league’s investigation and stand by our initial public statement from Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008: “The suggestion that the New England Patriots recorded the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002 is absolutely false.”

The Patriots’ organizational focus at this time is on the NFL Draft and preparing for what we hope will be an exciting 2008 season. We will have no further comments regarding Matt Walsh at this time."

Matt Walsh's attorney, Michael Levy:
"Today, Mr. Walsh and the National Football League reached an agreement under which the NFL will provide legal indemnification and a release of claims against Mr. Walsh relating to his employment by the Patriots and the Patriots' videotaping operations.

I am pleased that we now have an agreement that provides Mr. Walsh with appropriate legal protections. Mr. Walsh is looking forward to providing the NFL with the materials he has and telling the NFL what he knows.

The agreement provides that, on or before May 8, 2008, Mr. Walsh will provide the NFL with any documents he may have, including videotapes, that relate to allegations of videotaping of Patriots opponents and that he will make himself reasonably available for an interview with the NFL soon thereafter. The agreement further provides that Mr. Walsh must make himself available for an interview with the NFL prior to conducting any such interview with any third party inquirers, including the media. Accordingly, Mr. Walsh will not be making any statements at this time."

NFL:
"An agreement has been completed between the NFL and Matt Walsh that will allow Mr. Walsh, a former videotape operator with the New England Patriots, to share with the NFL information about activities occurring during his employment with the club from 1997-2003.

Commissioner Goodell will meet with Mr. Walsh in the commissioner’s office on Tuesday, May 13, the earliest date that Mr. Walsh, who lives in Hawaii, will be available on the east coast.
The agreement also requires Mr. Walsh to return any tapes and other items in his possession that belong to the Patriots. In return, the NFL and the Patriots have promised not to sue Mr. Walsh. They also will indemnify him for any expenses, including legal fees that he incurs in connection with the interview.

Commissioner Goodell determined last September that the Patriots had violated league rules by videotaping opposing coaches' defensive signals during Patriots games throughout Bill Belichick’s tenure as head coach. Coach Belichick admitted to his use of the taping practice on a regular basis as a result of what he said was his misinterpretation of the rule.

Commissioner Goodell imposed substantial discipline on Coach Belichick and the club as a result of that practice. The interview with Mr. Walsh will seek to determine whether he has any new information about that videotaping practice or other possible violations of league rules.
Following the meeting with Mr. Walsh on May 13, there will be a news media briefing later that day in New York that will be attended by Commissioner Goodell."

Let the games begin until May 13th when Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) will also talk to Matt Walsh.

Terrell Owens is prepping for the Draft with the Bang Bus Bros!

The Bruins season is over. Ironically, the one thing that plagued them all season, finishing and putting the puck in the net, plagued them in game 7 against the Canadiens. The B's were flying early despite the 1-0 deficit, outshooting the Habs 11-4 at one point in the first period.

Scott's Shots has the news that Gordon Edes is leaving the Boston Globe for Yahoo.

The Dolphins continue to try to sign either Jake Long or Vernon Gholston by Saturday's 3pm NFL Draft start.

Catching up

It's been a few days since my last post, but lots of work around the house in what has been a gorgeous weekend takes priority. Can you say 18 bags of leaves!!!

A few nuggets from the weekend (pre-Celtics game one vs. Hawks):

* - The Red Sox had no business winning Sunday, coming from behind with six to top the Rangers in the final three innings, 6-5. Nice to see Jacoby Ellsbury and Jed Lowrie leading the way back. Quite reminiscent of last season's Mother's Day Miracle vs. the O's don't you think?

* - Speaking of no business, how about the Bruins forcing a Game 7 against the Canadiens Monday night. This is why players always tell you that you must eliminate a team the first time you can. Sometimes, you just can't put the genie back in the bottle and now the Habs can dial up the 2004 Yankees and ask them how they felt heading into a game 7 at home with all the pressure on them. Kudos too to Claude Julien. By putting Phil Kessel back on the ice after his benching, you sure have lit a fire to Kessel and the rest of this team. We may be looking back at that one move as the one that lit the spark. Let's hope so.

* - Frank Thomas gets dumped the Blue Jays. The Big Hurt will be a nice pick-up for someone. If I'm the Rays, I'm calling.

* - Joe Calzaghe vs. Bernard Hopkins fight on Saturday night was truly a thing of frustration. Calzaghe clearly dominated the pace, tone and punches in the fight. The problem was that the only power punches landed were by Hopkins, including a first-round knockout. As far as expectations though, it was nice to see a fight deliver.

* - Get ready for the mountain of misinformation this week as it's NFL Draft Week.

BTW: My pick for the Jets at #6 is Darren McFadden.

Ciao!

Sox/Yanks

Red Sox and Yankees tonight at the Stadium in the first of a quick two in NY. Sox skipper Terry Francona to join Mike and the Mad Dog this afternoon. Listen live on WFAN online or watch it on the YES Network (ch. 622 on DirecTV).

Gotta love college basketball. Just a couple of days after spurning Providence and yearning for UMASS, Travis Ford leaves Amherst for Oklahoma State. Just ridiculous. If coaches can lie and move jobs on a dime, it's time for the NCAA to let the players do the same. Can you say double standard?

Some quick NFL scheduling thoughts:
* - Patriots: can you say cupcake!

* - Primetime: do we really need the Bears on five times? I, for one, don't mind the Browns on five times since they are flat out offensive (in a good way!)

* - Arizona and Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Night? Makes me want to wax poetically for the days of the Survivor Series on Turkey Day.

Can the Bruins finish just once?!? Painful to see them lose 1-0 last night. Series is over.

Finally, a little American Idol from last night from Syesha Mercado doing Mariah Carey. (Down boys!)

Kids gone wild

A very unsettling story from Florida where several girls conspired to beat up another girl for 30 minutes and it was all caught on videotape! Very disturbing. Check it out below from the Today Show.

Pawsox opener

A very cold Pawsox opener highlighted by a stellar outing by Bartolo Colon (he hit 96 on the radar gun with a quality five innings). My nephew Mark JR, niece Jesse and I braved the very cold and windy night!

Today's Red Sox news: a 10-2 loss in Toronto and Kyle Snyder's been designated for assignment.

On a brighter note, the Boston Bruins have made the NHL Playoffs. They'll find out who they play after this weekend's final few games.

The Tradition ends...

More bloodletting at WBZ-TV. Gone are Bob Lobel, Joyce Kulhawik and Scott Wahle.

So much for "The Tradition!" Here's a vintage promo from the mid-90's.

In other media news, DirecTV adds ESPNews, Disney Channel and Toon Disney to its HD lineup today.

Tuesday news

Courtesy of David Scott's Scott's Shots, the new Tina Cervasio in town will be Heidi Watney. Check her out, she'll fit in just fine.

Also, courtesy of Mr. Scott, Jackie MacMullen will take the buyout at the Globe to spend more time with her family. As someone who's spending more time with my daughter at the moment, I applaud Jackie's decision. She is a true professional!

More layoffs in the biz as 30 staffers were let go at WBZ-TV. It's part of a nation-wide cost cutting measure by CBS. Another sign that the media business is not what it used to be.

Lineups are out for tonight's American opener for the Sox in Oakland. Here they are courtesy of the Boston Globe:

1 Jacoby Ellsbury-RF
2. Dustin Pedroia-2B
3. David Ortiz-DH
4. Manny Ramirez-LF
5. Mike Lowell-3B
6. Kevin Youkilis-1B
7. Jason Varitek-C
8. Coco Crisp-CF
9. Julio Lugo-SS

Bartolo Colon will get the start at Pawucket Thursday. I'll be there to take it in live and in person. Bobby Kielty's accepted his assignment to Pawtucket as well. Mike Timlin may make an appearance April 7th and 8th before joining the big club.

Finally, if you get a chance, check out "Fang's Bites", as my buddy Ken Fang does a fantastic job everyday keeping us on our toes!!!
